At ONE Friday Fights 21, undefeated Frenchman Alexis “Barboza” Nicolas put a stop to Regian “The Immortal” Eersel’s dominant reign atop the two sports in the division with a spectacular performance to win the ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Title inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. However, the second round proved to be a huge one for “Barboza” as he stunned the champ with a huge right cross that led to a knockdown. Sensing a great deal of urgency following the knockdown, Eersel would be the more aggressive fighter through the rest of the match. Nicolas would not back down though, which led to an unpredictable result. As ONE ring announcer Dom Lau read the results, both men waited in anticipation at whose hand was going to be raised. Ultimately, the victory would be awarded to Nicolas, extending his undefeated streak to 24-0. Apart from getting the coveted belt, the 25-year-old also put an end to Eersel’s 22-fight win streak that dates all the way back to 2016. In the co-main event, Tye Ruotolo successfully defended the ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship against Australia’s Izaak Michell with a submission they called the “Ruotolotine.” Earlier in the night, his brother, Kade, pulled off a modified arm-in choke from the back to pick up a win against Francisco Lo and earn himself a US$50,000 performance bonus. During the post-fight interview, the brothers agreed to call it the “Ruotolotine”. Amazingly, Tye would perform the exact same move as his brother and also get the tap and a bonus of his own. Meanwhile, in heavyweight MMA action, charismatic Canadian star Ben Tynan claimed another stoppage and the last bonus of the event at the expense of Australia’s Duke Didier. Following his win, he took the opportunity to call out three-division MMA World Champion Anatoly Malykhin, saying “no middleweight can beat him” in a match.
